School systems in WNC are seeking people interested in providing mentoring support for a new S.M.A.R.T. sport initiative to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in your schools.

The robotics teams have a proven track record of appealing to a broad spectrum of students in elementary and middle school, a time when they are most likely to lose interest in science and math. The students have so much fun developing a creative science project and building the robot that they are not aware that they are acquiring critical life skill and learning the usefulness of science, technology, engineering and math.

Program Description:
The FIRST® LEGO® League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds, which is designed to get children excited about science technology, engineering and math—and teach them valuable employment and life skills. The project will support the formation of FIRST® LEGO® League teams for elementary and middle schools in WNC EDNET County. Each team of up to 10 students will program an autonomous robot (using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot set) to score points on a thematic playing surface as well as create an innovative solution to a problem as part of their research project. In addition to the coaches that each middle school will provide, Mentors are being sought that will provide additional help.

Mentorship Expectations:
· Be a Mentor for one school team and meet with the team 2-4 times after school during the season (1-2 hours each)
· Provide school team a tour of your workplace, or other educational outing
· No robotics experience necessary!
· Assist with Competition(s) on (after school or on a Saturday)
